Is journalism really a bad choice when it comes to earning a good income, I need a honest answer

I've done my BA in history and pol sc, now I'm looking for a good PG program and I'm thinking of applying for an MA in journalism at Xaviers in Mumbai. But I've heard that journalism doesn't pay well, so I'm a bit unsure. I have an Instagram page with over 10k followers where I post news and info, will that give me an edge? I'm really confused, please help me out

Journalism isn't a "bad" career financially, but it's not a high-paying field by default especially in the first few years. Entry-level roles in print and digital media in India often pay modestly, and growth depends heavily on specialization, network, and skill. However, areas like political analysis, policy reporting, business journalism, and data journalism tend to have better long-term earning potential. An MA from St. Xavier's College can help with credibility and industry access, but the degree alone won't guarantee high income. Your internships, portfolio, and niche will matter more.

Your 10K-follower Instagram page is definitely an advantage if it reflects original analysis, verified information, and consistency. It shows initiative and audience understanding, which newsrooms value. If you're choosing journalism purely for money, there are more predictable options. But if you're genuinely interested in media, public discourse, and political or social issues, it can become financially viable over time, especially if you build expertise and a strong personal brand alongside formal education.
