We could have a regular season MVP and a finals MVP in the IPL, just like the NBA.

Karan

For once I agree. Sometimes you'll have players who perform amazingly well but the team collapses, so it's unfair if the team doesn't qualify and they lose a chance. The playing field should be fair for everyone.

Anusha

Yep, the orange cap and purple cap should be awarded after the league phase. Also, we should have a playoff MVP award to recognise the best performers in the playoffs.

I get the point - it's a bit unfair but that's how it is. The award goes to who scores the most runs or takes the most wickets in the tournament. If a game is washed out, a player might have one fewer innings. How do we compensate for that? Some pitches are easier to bat on than others - how do we adjust? In reality we can't, so knowledgeable fans should know that the orange cap for a season doesn't automatically mean the best batter of the season.

Instead, have a separate orange and purple cap for the playoffs stage - it's a win-win. Also, I'd like to introduce a green cap for catching, based on the green-dot-ball logic.

Rishi

I read some comments saying playoff matches are included, so the runs should impact your team's win, otherwise padding stats is useless if your team didn't benefit. But the orange cap is for most runs scored in the IPL, not the most impactful batter. Runs are runs, whether in a lost cause or a winning one. Maybe we should add two more awards - "Most Impactful Bowler" and "Most Impactful Batsman". Those awards could be based on formulas using economy rates, averages, and different weightages for wickets taken in winning vs losing causes, etc. For the most impactful batter, the formula could consider runs, strike rate, and the percentage of runs contributed in winning innings vs losing innings. Give these two awards at the end of the season, including playoff matches, while the purple cap and orange cap remain based on league matches only.

I don't agree. It is what it is. In the World Cup, some teams play more matches so those players have a better chance to win the POTT. Even in football it's the same. I've seen suggestions to split the award with two separate winners for league and knockouts, but then some will still back a player who performed well throughout. Whatever you think, you can't please everyone unless you hand out participation trophies like in school competitions.
