Hey,

Today I asked my branch manager if I could go home at 6:50 PM. He asked what I would do at home. I told him I needed to cook, and he said I could finish cooking and be back at the branch by 8 PM.

I then asked if I would get overtime. He got angry and asked how many hours of overtime I wanted. I said officially the workday ends at 5 PM, but he replied in anger, 'From tomorrow start leaving at 5 PM, finish whatever work I gave you, and tell me what you have done before you go. We'll discuss tomorrow.'

What should I do now?

Avni

Well done, brother. Just tell them what you've completed and leave at 5 PM.

Vidya

Your official work time ends at 4:45 PM. After that you can decide whether to stay or leave. Finish whatever work is pending and then go home. If they keep pressuring you, you can raise the issue with your union—they'll help.

Anjali

Why are you leaving at 6:50? You should have left by 5 PM on your own. The habit you set on day one will stick. If the workload is heavy, staying till 5:30 PM is the max.

Hey God, what are you doing there at 6:50? In my branch staff start leaving around 4:45, and after 4–4:15 we play low‑volume music.

Bottom line: talk to the union and explain your problem. They will definitely help.

Golden rule: keep your phone recording on and be firm about your working hours. Tell him, 'I'll try my best to finish the work.' If he doesn't accept, let him see the result. Also be prepared for a possible transfer. During probation you may have to tolerate a bit, but don't let them pin you down—otherwise you'll end up with a half‑baked situation.

Is that manager sleeping in the office? What's with asking us to be back by 8 PM?

Ravindra

Brother, I'm also a new joinee. I quietly mark my own attendance, pick up my bag and tell the sir I'm leaving. Just finish your work and walk out. Their nonsense is just unnecessary pressure. If they want a clerk to stay after 5 PM, they should get a lower‑grade salary. There's no need to keep coming tomorrow.

Ramesh

Don't wait to finish everything. Focus on completing as much as you can by 4:45 PM. If someone piles on more work, take it, but at 4:45 PM hand over any unfinished tasks to the branch manager or service manager and leave the branch. Always keep the attendance register updated. Also speak to the local RS and DGS. I'm an SBI associate, so I know how many difficult BMs there are. Fight back if needed—ask for an office order if you're forced to stay past 4:45 PM and claim overtime through HRMS. If they don't approve, take it to higher authority. Stay strong; otherwise they'll keep harassing you. Make it a habit to leave at 4:45 PM sharp, not at 5 or 5:30.

Sandeep

Leaving was inevitable.

Make sure to give an update tomorrow.
