NEW DELHI: A 23‑year‑old Dalit woman says she was raped by several men over the past few years and kept locked in a house in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar after being forced to convert to Islam.

Police have arrested four people. The main accused, Fahim, is already behind bars in another case and a production warrant has been filed against him.

An FIR was lodged on May 14 at the Jamia Nagar police station after the woman approached police with complaints of rape, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement, forced religious conversion and physical assault.

She claims that in Nov 2021 a man calling himself Sahil contacted her on Instagram, saying he was Hindu. She met him at a house in Batla House in March 2022, where "Sahil" allegedly assaulted her and filmed it. He then blackmailed her with the video, threatening to upload it online. Later she was taken to Meerut and discovered that "Sahil" was actually Fahim, she says.

She accuses Fahim, his father Khursheed and their family of repeatedly assaulting her, keeping her confined, thrashing her and threatening to kill her if she tried to escape.

The FIR states that on May 27 2022 she was taken to a madrassa in Agwanpur at gunpoint and forced to marry him. Her name was changed to Ayesha and her Aadhaar details were tampered with. She also says Khursheed would bring "blood‑stained meat" and force her to clean, cut and cook it, beating her if she refused.

She told TOI, "He said he cannot go abroad for Hajj because of his criminal record, so he needs a Hindu woman to marry and convert to Islam to enter Jannat."

Fahim's brother Azeem allegedly hung her daughter upside down from a terrace to threaten her, the FIR says.

She further alleges that unknown men often visited the house to trade firearms, leaving them alone with her and raping her.

"After he was sent to jail in Jan 2025, I escaped with my three‑year‑old daughter to Ballabgarh. Even there he kept calling and threatening to find and kill me," she said.

"In May this year I went to Ballabgarh station with my daughter to commit suicide, but someone stopped me. They connected me with NGOs and I filed a police complaint," she added.

How can we tackle such crimes?

What on earth is happening? How can anyone get away with such horrible acts?

This is exactly why we need feminism. We can't stop men from committing these crimes, but an educated, empowered and well‑supported woman wouldn't have become a victim.

She's just 23, a young girl with dreams and hopes. She went to an unknown house with an unknown man. All the young girls here, don't be naive. We're raised in protective homes, but once we step out, we must stay alert and not fall prey to such men.

We should boost conviction rates so everyone knows that heinous crimes will definitely get punished. There should be no bail in such cases.

In the end, that woman was manipulated; it doesn't matter her caste or his religion. Her basic rights were denied.

Would it have been any different if she were Muslim or if he were Hindu? No. The same pattern repeats across every caste, religion and social status. Our society keeps failing women.

Bottom line: stay away from disgusting men who manipulate physically, financially or emotionally.

I'm fed up with boys' mothers of any age. They fail to teach their sons basic respect. If I ever have a child, I don't want a son. I'm emotionally exhausted by constant news of women being killed, raped, tortured, etc.

No offense, but mothers of boys, please teach your sons about respect, handling rejection, basic household chores and everything else.
