I'm really into vintage actors. I've watched a few films of Motilal and Balraj Sahni and noticed their style is quite similar to Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan and Kay Kay. I realized I can watch their movies any time without over‑thinking because they hardly ever miss a beat with memorable performances. Would love to hear what you all think – who are your favourite natural actors, not the big superstars?

Sharmila

Advik

I'd like to add Sanjeev Kumar to the list.

Avni

Kay Kay can get theatrical when the role demands it, but I agree – they're all very natural and effortless.

Vinay

Naseer shines in parallel cinema but tends to over‑act in mainstream films.

Natural actors are those who never look out of place, no matter the genre.

Kay Kay Menon can be a bit theatrical even in arthouse movies.

Edit: Irrfan never seemed out of place in any kind of film. I haven't seen the other two, so I'll go with your suggestion.

Edit2: Om Puri is another actor who owned the screen in both commercial and art cinema.

Murali

Nice list.
What about Nana Patekar – does he fit this category?

Ishita

Naseer Ji shouldn't be on this list. No disrespect, but his natural acting falls flat in mainstream cinema. Still, he's one of the finest actors we have in the country and even worldwide.

Shailesh

Motilal, Balraj Sahni (the GOAT) and Kay Kay are spot on.

But I don't agree about Naseer and Irrfan. Irrfan uses the same dialogue delivery and style in every film – he's always Irrfan, never really becoming the character, kind of like Shah Rukh or Salman. His early death doesn't automatically make him a great actor.

Naseer has a huge ego, is overly self‑absorbed and acts like he's the best, which shows on screen.

Sanjeev Kumar, Pankaj Kapur and Manoj Bajpayee should also be on the list.

Subhash

Meera

I'd say 'understated' is the right word – actors like Amol Palekar and Farooq Sheikh belong on this list too. By the way, he and Deepti Naval were great together in Saath Saath (I love that soundtrack and the film!).
