Burned bridges with recruiter: how screwed am I?

Edit: I have 4 years of experience.

On Friday, a third‑party recruiter messaged me about a Full‑stack + Gen AI role at Adobe and said there was a drive on Wednesday. She asked if I could make it. It's a 5‑6 hour bus ride for me, so I thought I'd take a couple of days' leave, go to Noida on Tuesday, stay overnight and then attend the interview. I said yes.

On Monday I called her to confirm. She told me I hadn't been shortlisted yet and would let me know by end of day. Later that day I called her 5‑6 times, but she didn't pick up. She finally replied on Tuesday at 6 p.m. asking me to show up. I asked again if I was shortlisted and she said the hiring manager still hadn't confirmed. I told her I can't take leave at the last minute, spend money and energy to travel on a "maybe".

She said I should have mentioned that earlier so she could find someone else. I replied, "Tell the hiring manager to respond sooner, and I would have told you on Monday I couldn't make it if you had answered my calls."

So I'm wondering if I was being unreasonable asking for a clear interview confirmation. Will they blacklist me? Can they influence other recruitment agencies?

Madhu

Whatever they do, they can only affect your chances of getting hired at Adobe. They can't do anything beyond that.

Pillai

You're fine, no blacklist or anything. You were reasonable asking for confirmation before travelling. Maybe your tone got a bit sharp, but that happens. Recruiters don't share info across companies like that. Just move on, it won't affect much.

Aarti

You were fine. Blacklisting you for this would be a lot of work. That hiring team seems unprofessional – good riddance.

Prem

Do one thing – go for the interview, then if you're angry, change your HR or vent elsewhere. Don't just leave the interview and waste their time.

Swathi

Who cares? They're useless – can't do anything anyway.

Bhavya

Please don't worry. Also, that's just one recruiter from a third‑party vendor. Honesty and loyalty go both ways. I wonder why a recruiting agency can't understand that :)

Jai

#i support you brother. I will never take leave easily for an interview because I know the evil practices of HRs

Larry

Ignore recruiters without any hesitation

Aryan

They will neither blacklist you nor influence any other recruitment agency. Recruiters will come back to you when you're immediately available.

Harini

This isn't really a burned bridge unless you were rude. It's a learning – always over‑communicate your availability and requirements with recruiters. They're right to say they don't know your travel plans. The sensible ones appreciate over‑communication.
