So today I went to SBI with my mother to open an account. Her Aadhaar didn't have the updated mobile number – it still shows my father's number. The clerk accepted the form, took her fingerprint and then asked for an OTP. The OTP was sent to my father's phone. When I asked him for the code, the clerk said she won't open the account without the phone.

I understand SBI creates a YONO account for everyone, which also gives a demat account, and it's our fault for not updating the Aadhaar mobile number.

But the way she said, "ye rakhiye apne kagaz nhi khul payega account," felt very harsh.

I'm also preparing for SBI exams and hope to work there someday, so I'm shocked that a clerical‑level officer can be so rude.

The whole atmosphere felt really toxic.

Study hard, we need good CSA/PO candidates like you who don't behave like that rude clerk you met.

Swati

Yes, the job can be quite toxic. Most bankers I've spoken to seem frustrated and even depressed.

Rakesh

Lmao. It's because she didn't want to wait while you called your dad for the OTP, and then risk the OTP timing out. She'd rather not waste her time. It's one of the most annoying things – I always tell people to bring their phones to the branch, especially when there's a long queue.

Naman

What she did was within policy, but her tone was unacceptable. You'll understand better once you're on the inside.

Don't take that behavior personally, buddy. It happens. Maybe the clerk was having a bad day or under pressure. Anyone in your shoes would probably get the same response. Just stay calm and aim to become a banker who treats everyone well.

Parth

Hope you get selected and can help improve such attitudes while dealing with pressure from seniors, customers and even family. Dealing with a high volume of customers changes you. Still, rude behaviour isn't justified. Sorry you had to face it.

In our city there are two SBI branches. The main branch has staff who are quite toxic and don't act professionally – most customers come from villages and aren't well‑educated, even some elderly folks get spoken to harshly. Interestingly, the manager there is actually very calm.

The second branch is a different story. The employees there seem to think they're all scholars, but they don't know basic courtesy. They sit behind their desks in fancy outfits and glasses, and when I took my aunt there, they said, "You don't even know why you're opening an account, you're just after money." They kept throwing remarks like "you're not educated enough." It really depends on the branch. In other parts of the city, the Union Bank staff are friendly and helpful.
