In Germany you get back 25 cents for every bottle you return. The bottle itself costs about 1 Euro, so when you buy a drink your bill is roughly 1.25 Euros. You get the 25 cents back when you recycle it. So you're not earning money, just getting a small refund on what you paid.

That's why the comment saying it wouldn't work in India because people would create more waste doesn't add up. Even if they paid extra for the bottles, and even if some folks start scavenging the streets for discarded bottles, it would still be a net gain for the environment.
