Tsewang Chuskit – Captain of India's Women's National Ice Hockey Team and a pioneering force in winter sports

Tsewang Chuskit leads the Indian Women's National Ice Hockey Team and is one of the most influential pioneers of winter sports in India. She grew up in Tangtse village, in the Changthang region of Ladakh, learning to skate on frozen high‑altitude lakes.

Her journey started at age 10, long before any formal structure existed for the sport in India. When the first Indian women's national ice‑hockey team was formed in 2016, Chuskit was among the founding members, training under tough conditions with limited gear and facilities.

As the game developed, she rose to captain, steering India from a self‑funded group of athletes to a competitive international side.

Under her captaincy, India clinched its first international medal – a bronze at the IIHF Women's Asia Cup in Al‑Ain, UAE, 2025.

She holds the record for most points (22) and most goals (13) in the history of the Indian women's national team.

Chuskit also captained Ladakh at the Khelo India Winter Games, leading the side to a silver medal in 2024, the year women's ice hockey entered the national winter‑games programme.

After Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019, she played a key role in strengthening the UT Ladakh ice‑hockey programme and creating more opportunities for local athletes.

A sustainability advocate, she often talks about climate change shrinking Ladakh's natural ice rinks – once usable for four‑to‑five months, now barely two.

Currently, she represents Rosefinch Ladakh in India's first‑ever India Ice Hockey League in Dehradun, contributing both as a player and a mentor.
