Mess up 11th-12th, low % in Maharashtra Board, unsure what to do next

mq_qualifications: 12th Maharashtra board.

Hi everyone,

I'm a Class 12 student from Maharashtra (State Board) and I'm in a pretty bad situation academically and mentally right now.

In 10th (CBSE) I scored 95.6% and was among the top students in my school. But after that I completely lost direction. I chose PCMB in 11th without any clear goal, and instead of building consistency I got stuck in a cycle of procrastination, over‑thinking and wasting time, which I regret now.

I tried preparing for NDA but never stayed consistent. I kept making plans, cleaning my environment, uninstalling apps, etc., but didn't actually study. This pattern repeated for almost two years.

In 11th I dropped to ~72% because I didn't study. In 12th I barely studied and ended up relying on last‑minute preparation – I literally studied one day before each exam and even cheated just to pass. Realistically I'm expecting around 50‑55% in my board results.

Now I'm facing multiple issues:
- I have weak basics in almost all subjects
- I don't have a clear career direction anymore
- I'm worried about getting admission in a decent college (especially in general category)
- I feel like I've wasted the last 2 years and disappointed my parents
- I've developed bad habits (procrastination, excessive phone use, etc.) and struggle to stay consistent very much.

I'm not looking for sympathy. I just want practical advice.

My main questions:
1. What realistic undergraduate options do I have with ~50‑55% in Maharashtra?
2. Should I go for BA, BCom or BSc considering weak fundamentals?
3. How do I rebuild my basics and discipline from this point?
4. Is taking a drop year worth it in my situation, or should I move forward with any degree and improve alongside it?

If anyone has been in a similar situation and managed to recover, I'd really appreciate your guidance.

Thanks for reading.

For a situation like yours, the best help comes from you. First ask yourself where your real interest lies – is it PCMB leading to NEET/JEE, or something in commerce? I'm not sure how much 11th‑12th knowledge matters for undergraduate commerce courses, but if you pair it with short‑term certifications or an MBA later, it can be a decent path.

If you want a fresh start, you could consider law, which doesn't require strong prior basics, though most entrance exams have already taken place.

Think about whether procrastination alone caused this, or if you simply lost interest in the science stream. If it's the former, you could try the same stream again and appear for JEE or NEET. If it's the latter, with board marks around 50‑55% as a general‑category student, getting into a good college will be tough. A drop year seems like the realistic option right now.

There's no shame in taking a drop year to improve your score.

You can also join BSc or BA if that interests you.

Make sure you kick the procrastination habit, otherwise you'll waste the drop year as well.
