First job joy spoiled by relatives

I'm a 2026 graduate and just landed a decent job with a salary of ₹25k per month.

Getting this job wasn't easy. I'm not a tech wizard - I'd say I'm pretty average and the market's tough right now. So I was genuinely happy to get placed.

Recently, some relatives kept asking about my job. I told them where I got placed and the salary.

Their response was: "What? That's it?"

Ever since then that phrase keeps looping in my head.

I know ₹25k/month isn't a huge salary, but given my skills and how hard placements have been, I felt it was a decent start.

Has anyone else faced comments like this from relatives or friends? How did you stop letting it affect you?

Edit: Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

Relatives ko maar goli, tu bata party kab de raha?

Niraj

Same thing happened to me. I stopped sharing my salary after that - feels embarrassing, not gonna lie.

Sonal

I never answer salary questions - neither when it's low nor when it's high.

Bhai, if you throw a party, we'll get the advice. Otherwise, figure it out yourself....

Ajay

Congrats, OP. Are your parents happy? If they are, be happy too and keep focusing on self‑improvement.

Arre bhai, chhod de yaar. I'm proud of you, man. For freshers the market is almost zero and you're already making a quarter of a lakh. Keep going and don't worry about those relatives.

Five years ago I was earning ₹30k a month. Now I'm pulling in almost ₹3 L per month (I'm rounding the numbers for clarity).

I did my B.Tech in a tier‑3 college with a non‑IT stream, yet somehow I landed a job right after graduation. You know how anxious parents get when their kids graduate jobless.

To the relatives who used to look down on my dad and us for being lower‑middle‑class (we have no generational wealth), I proved we can move from LMU to UMC.

Always remember: stay curious, stay hungry, ask questions, have faith in God, stay humble, work strategically. Never compare yourself with others - the world has people earning 0k, 10k, 25k, 1L, even 1 Cr. If I could do it, anyone can.

Thanks for the question, buddy - it made me feel nostalgic and happy.

My first salary was ₹40k. I said it was 'one lakh forty thousand.' Their son was earning ₹1.20 L - loved that reaction.

Anjali

Congratulations! Ignore them. When I got my first job four years ago, I was earning ₹10k a month and people had a lot to say. Recently I received a 24 LPA offer and those same people started calling me hardworking. I told my mom, "I'm the same person I was four years ago - only my salary changed." Funny how quickly perception shifts.

Dude, in this economy even a ₹25k job is a dream for graduates. Relatives have no idea what's happening in tech.
