Gym becoming too expensive?

I used to think the gym membership was the pricey part, but now supplements are adding to the burden too. Whey prices keep going up, basic food costs more, and staying consistent is getting harder on the wallet. Anyone else feels fitness is turning into a luxury rather than a lifestyle? What are you doing to cut costs?

Sunita

The days of extra luxuries are ending; we need to look for alternatives to stay fit and ditch these costly things.

I feel the opposite - luxury and premium tags are becoming affordable and accessible to everyone. Especially for gyms, when you're part of the crowd you realize this isn't a luxury or premium I paid for ♀.

How much does your gym cost per year?

Mine is 9k, which I think is reasonable for an AC gym in Mumbai.

Gym fees are high, and on top of that we have to deal with huge crowds. They should really lower the prices they charge for new subscriptions and improve crowd management. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a Cult membership. Just find a local gym and join there.

Gym membership prices have become unrealistic. In Mumbai Ghatkopar I was paying 12k for a decent gym, now in Jodhpur I'm paying 18k for a wannabe premium gym where the machines feel odd and they don't have waist belts - I'll have to buy one. On top of that, protein prices have skyrocketed. People are paying 6k for 2 kg of MuscleBlaze protein. I've been taking protein since 2018, and back then you could get more than 5 kg for 6k. A decent whey protein concentrate was around 1200-1500 and blends were below 2000 per kg. Protein prices have more than doubled in 8 years, and the gyms are trash and overpriced.

Getting a great physique never had to be expensive. You can achieve a good to great body without supplements; it just takes longer than someone using whey. I used to train on a hostel diet and had a solid physique, though with higher body fat. Whey protein helps you build a great physique while staying in a calorie deficit.

Not really, my membership costs 11k per year for a very good AC gym with major Panatta machines (including a separate dedicated leg area). And you don't have to rely on whey if you work out - you can meet your protein goals without it.

This is my experience too. Gyms in NA are much cheaper; they pay $10 for an Anytime Fitness-level gym. Meanwhile we pay 1000 for a mediocre, barely functional gym. Mine doesn't have a hip machine, any back machine except a lat pulldown, and is just stacked with the most basic equipment.

Amitabh

Mine is 14.5k for 13 months, including a 1-month pause. I think it's okay for Bangalore, given the huge floor space and all the machines.
