UVA vs UVB: How it changed my sunscreen buying

Saw this and realised how confusing sunscreen education online has been for ages. I used to think SPF was the only thing that mattered. If a sunscreen said SPF 50, I just assumed it gave the maximum protection and that was it.

But my skin kept tanning unevenly, got irritated after long sun exposure, and the dark patches around my mouth got worse every summer.

I didn't know that SPF mainly measures UVB protection – the burning part you see as redness or sunburn. UVA is the sneaky one that goes deeper, causing lingering pigmentation, uneven tone, barrier stress and premature ageing.

And UVA is present almost all the time, even near windows, which made me wonder why my skin sometimes feels irritated indoors too.

What surprised me most is how small the jump is between SPF 30 and SPF 50 on paper. SPF 30 blocks about 97 % of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks around 98 %. Marketing makes it sound like SPF 50 is double the protection, but it's not that dramatic.

Now I care more about whether a sunscreen has good UVA protection and if I'll actually reapply it, because a perfect SPF 50 means nothing if I hate wearing it by midday. I also think many people mix up tanning and barrier irritation, calling a sunscreen "bad" when sometimes it's just:
- not enough applied
- no re‑application
- weak UVA protection
- already sensitised skin barrier
- staying in direct sun for hours with a single morning application

I wish sunscreen talks online focused less on "white cast / glow / makeup finish" and more on how protection really works, because I had to unlearn a lot of random skincare misinformation.

I was already aware of this, which is why I stick with my Neutrogena ✌

I learned about this a few years back and it really helped me focus on using sunscreen. What a great infographic!

Instead of looking at SPF, I always check the PA rating.

I read about this a few days ago on another subreddit, so I ordered La Roche‑Posay.

10000 % agree. I never knew blue light could also cause damage. It's extremely important to spread the knowledge.
