So today is Monday, which basically means universal chest day at the gym. While I was benching, I realized I was the only one using a thumbless (suicide grip); everyone else had the traditional grip. Then it hit me... I've somehow started using the thumbless grip for almost everything—dumbbells, pulldowns, pushdowns, rows, OHP, pretty much all my lifts. I don't even remember when the shift happened; it just kind of did. I can bench 100 kg, my wrists feel fine and the bar path actually feels smoother with the suicide grip. So now I'm curious, what does the general gym crowd think about this? Anyone else here use thumbless grip regularly or am I just that one guy?

Arvind

Do you even know it's called the suicide grip?

Usha

Is it okay to keep the wrist bent? I use the same grip, but many people tell me to keep my wrist straight.

Khushi

I'm comfortable using the suicide grip on my 70 kg bench as well. I usually begin with the regular grip and then switch mid‑set without even thinking.

It feels a lot better and improves the mind‑muscle connection.

Sakshi

I'm a beginner, so I'm not an expert, but I think the thumbless grip helps you feel the muscles in most exercises. However, using it for bench press could be risky if something goes wrong.

Ranjit

One slip and you could end up in trouble. The thumbless grip is okay for exercises where the weight can't fall on you—lat pulldowns, rows, pull‑ups, etc. But for OHP and bench press you should stick to the regular grip.

If you have a solid spotter you might try it, trusting your life to them. Otherwise it's too risky for the small gains you'd get.

There's a reason it's called the suicide grip... if someone stops posting, we'll know. It's fine, carry on.
