I finally made it to Kaza in Spiti Valley, and it felt nothing like the rest of India – it was like stepping into a cold desert. Night temps dropped to about -26°C, and that's when you truly feel the survival mode kicking in. Water bottles freeze solid, fingers go numb in minutes, and even the breath feels sharp and icy.
But the night sky made it all worth it. The Milky Way over Kaza is unreal – no city lights, no noise, just a blanket of stars that seems almost fake.
Mornings brought a different challenge. While most people stayed wrapped in blankets, I stepped out and even tried jogging in sub‑zero weather. The roads were silent and the whole town seemed frozen in time.
The most unexpected delight was the local Himalayan dogs. They're super friendly and would just join me on my walks – felt like I'd got travel buddies out of nowhere.
Spiti isn't just about stunning landscapes; it's about pushing physical and mental limits. It really makes you value the simple things we often take for granted.

If anyone's curious about how it actually feels to be there, I captured some of it here: https://youtu.be/rji8Sh4Wbsw?si=PBDilcekeRNdWFR8
It's an experience you'll never forget. I was there two years ago and it dropped to -14°C. The landscapes from Reckong Peo to Kaza were surreal. I tell all my friends to visit Spiti at least once in their life, no matter what.
Ahh, the memories just flash back! I'm not a winter person either, but I still went to Spiti. Kaza can dip to -28°C at night. You'll remember it forever! This trip will make you fall in love with mountains and snow. Enjoy while it lasts! PS: Get a furry muffler that covers your head, ears and face. Trust me, you'll thank the gods later.
