Title: Missing something about Ranbir’s acting?
Post by: Mister on Mar 28, 2026, 10:38 PM
Look guys, I really don't want this to turn into another Ranbir vs Ranveer debate. I'm not trying to compare or put anyone down – both have their own strengths and flaws, and both are among the biggest actors in Bollywood right now.

I grew up watching films of both Ranbir and Ranveer, so this is pure curiosity. I've seen clips of Irrfan Khan and Fahadh Faasil praising Ranbir, and even that Shahid Kapoor interview with Karan Johar where Shahid said "yes" thinking Karan meant Ranbir for Kaminey, but when Karan clarified he meant Ranveer Singh, Shahid replied "oh Ranveer, no." That really surprised me.

So my genuine question is: is Ranbir actually considered the stronger actor between the two? I'm just trying to understand what others see.

Personally, I haven't seen a lot of range or depth in Ranbir's performances. The only film where I truly felt he completely transformed and impressed me was Sanju. Apart from that, I haven't connected much with his performances. On the other hand, I feel Ranveer is a total chameleon, especially in roles like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.

Again, this isn't hate, just curiosity. Maybe I'm missing something. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Shahid apparently dislikes Ranveer because Ranveer stole the spotlight from him in Padmaavat and other films. People tend to glorify the Kapoor family, so nobody wants to go against them.

I have the same question, OP.

It's more about the family clout. Most people think Ranveer is the better actor and will have a longer career because of his fitness and looks, while Ranbir, with his fuller face, might fade out or look old like his dad.

Ranbir is pretty average. He gets a lot of hype because he's the original Kapoor heir, and his bloodline often shields him from criticism. When you look at his acting, there's a noticeable lack of nuance and a limited range. Most of his roles follow the same self‑discovery trope, with similar emotions and mannerisms.

You could easily picture Ranveer or Vicky Kaushal playing Kabir Thapar from YJHD, Sid from Wake Up Sid, or Ranvijay from Animal. But imagine Ranbir as Chhatrapati Sambhaji in Chhava, or Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani, or Hamza/Jaskirat in Dhurandhar – it just doesn't fit. That says a lot.

That's kinda funny. Sanju felt like the only time he slightly overdid it.

Don't mind what some redditors say about Ranbir. He's truly talented. His performances are nuanced and subtle, which is where he shines. He makes the audience feel what the character feels, walks and talks like them without completely becoming them. When you watch Ranbir, you see the character through him, and that's what matters – whether he communicates the role well.

I'm with you, OP. I don't think he's a bad actor, just okay. He tends not to emote much with his eyes.

Ranbir often underplays his characters, which clicks with many new‑gen actors and directors. Ranveer adapts his style to the role – sometimes loud and aggressive, sometimes subtle. Underplaying Khilji wouldn't bring out the needed gore, but his restrained performance in Lootera and Gully Boy worked perfectly for those parts.

Ranveer brings high energy to every role. You can see he's acting, and he does it very well. With Ranbir, you feel he's just living the character; his acting is subtle and natural, not overtly visible.

Ranbir is definitely better at expressing tiny details – like in Barfi where he conveyed a lot without saying a word. Not many actors can pull that off.
