I'm a 25‑year‑old female Junior Engineer in Railways, wondering what my next career step should be since I haven't been able to study after office for the past few years.
My qualifications: BE in Civil Engineering. I'm torn between doing an MBA in this recession or preparing for RBI, LIC AAO, State PCS exams. After office (10‑7) I'm exhausted and not in the mood to study; I try but can't stick with it for more than a few days. I keep focusing on the negatives – RBI doesn't pay enough for me, I already have sufficient money; State PCS brings a lot of stress like blood‑pressure issues, etc. Currently I'm posted at the office, but there's a high chance I'll be transferred to a field job where I'd have to supervise a team on the tracks under the scorching sun, including female teams as well.
I would appreciate any views or perspectives.
When you get promoted to Assistant Engineer, the workload lightens a bit and you get several perks, so it seems like a good long‑term job.
Any life‑related advice or views are also welcome.
My 28‑year‑old girlfriend is doing a PhD at IIT and will appear for the state AE exam next month. As a woman in civil engineering, would a career as a Assistant Engineer be better than becoming an Assistant Professor in the future?
Are you thinking of a career change, or just looking for relief from the current fatigue?
I'm a 25‑year‑old male working in a railway PSU, same grade, facing the same problem.
LIC AAO isn't the best option. Try RBI and general insurance companies. Also consider SSC CGL.
