Title: Guidance on Choosing Cognitive Neuroscience as a Career in India
Post by: Pankaj on Mar 21, 2026, 07:25 PM
Need some guidance on picking cognitive neuroscience as a career path in India.

Hey folks,

I'm turning 20 this year and I've only cleared 12th so far. This is my third attempt at NEET – I've spent three years chasing a goal that never felt right. My parents still push for MBBS, but I can't continue; this will be my final NEET attempt. I'm actually drawn to cognitive neuroscience – I didn't even know it was a thing until recently. My parents never allowed me to explore other streams, but since last year I've started looking into different options. I've always liked psychology, not to become a psychologist, but to do research. I feel cognitive neuroscience suits me, yet I'm unsure about career prospects in India.

Could anyone guide me on the right qualifications to become a cognitive neuroscientist? I'm thinking of doing B.Sc. psychology because B.Sc. neuroscience programmes are almost non‑existent here. After a B.Sc. in psychology, what entrance exams do I need for an MSc in cognitive neuroscience? Which colleges offer it? After MSc, is a PhD the next step? What are the PhD entrance requirements and institutions? Also, are there internships during these courses? What does life look like during and after a PhD? I've been searching everywhere and still can't find clear answers.

Please help – I need the full picture so I don't waste any more time. Thanks!

There are some solid UG programmes at NIMHANS; they conduct their own entrance test and give you top‑level exposure across India.

Correction – they don't have a direct course that matches exactly, but the closest option is a B.Sc. in Clinical Neurophysiology Technology.

Still, aim to get into NIMHANS after completing a B.Sc. in neuroscience or psychology – it's the best route if you want a career in neuroscience.

NIMHANS also offers an MSc in neuroscience and a fellowship focused on cognitive neuroscience.
