Title: Gym woes for women - rant
Post by: Shashi on Jun 26, 2026, 06:37 AM
Why do men think we need their unsolicited advice?

I've been to four different gyms in the last 1.5 years. My main gym is fine, but when I travel I have to go to other places.

Every time I'm at a new gym, at least one guy comes up and starts lecturing me about my form, diet, workouts, weights, etc. Do they think they own the gym or have they all been appointed personal trainers?

PSA to all men: leave women alone. It's already intimidating walking into a male-dominated space. We don't need your advice or small talk. Most importantly, do not touch anyone mid-workout, male or female. If anyone needs help, they'll ask.

Please be mindful.

Men face this too. It's not about gender, it's about the 'I know more than you' attitude.

Have you tried bringing this up with the gym owner? He might be able to help.

Louder!!!! This happened to me today and almost every other day. They come and lecture me like I'm a beginner - bruh, I'm an intermediate now even if it doesn't look like it, lol.

I don't mind someone correcting me if I'm wrong, but most of the time it's unnecessary. I'm doing the right exercise with proper form and feeling the mind‑muscle connection, yet they still try to mansplain.

And you're right, it's already intimidating when I'm the only girl among these gym bros.

This isn't just a women's issue; it's happened to me many times too.

I joined this gym and was doing tricep pushdowns when a trainer suddenly popped up and started lecturing me that my form was wrong and I was basically wasting time. Then he showed me the 'correct' way.

When I asked to finish my set, instead of letting me continue, he started doing the exercise himself. I was like, 'Bro, I was using that.' He replied, 'Please take another cable.'

Like... what?

These folks don't get any attention at home, school or work, so they try to force it on strangers.

Even as a man I've faced this countless times. They often give wrong advice, just talking for the sake of talking without thinking.

I keep my distance from both women and men at the gym.

Yesterday a girl was squatting with a form that looked one rep away from a medical emergency. Could I have said something? Sure. Instead I pointed it out to the trainer and asked him to watch her form. He couldn't even convince her to adjust.

Today the same thing happened while she was deadlifting. Did I dare say anything after that? No way.

I get that many women feel intimidated walking into a gym, especially where I live. And yes, a lot of unsolicited advice is unwanted. But sometimes the concern is genuine, and genuine concern can easily be mistaken for being intrusive or creepy.

So I stick to my rule: if you don't ask for help, I mind my own business - men or women.

Your workout. Your rules. Your vertebrae.

It's so annoying. I try to schedule my workouts at quieter times, but I still hate the judgement and the mansplaining. It's been four years for me.

Exactly. The gym feels like a testosterone‑fueled zone. They mansplain, give advice and gyaan, then start hitting on you. When you turn them down they claim you were the one hitting on them. Every man tries his luck, even the older ones. I stopped going to the gym, work out at home now and I'm waiting for an all‑women's gym to open nearby. Gym culture is all about these alpha men.

Seriously, girl. I've had the same experience - men who don't even look fit themselves or have bad form come with unsolicited advice. Ugh, it's so irritating.
