Title: Irony of hospital food in India: mom’s osteoporosis diet is junk
Post by: Nakul on Jun 21, 2026, 01:13 AM
I'm staying at Aster Hospital in Hebbal, Bengaluru, looking after my mom who's admitted for osteoporosis. Her bones are very weak, so she needs proper nutrition to heal and regain strength.

I'm genuinely shocked by the total lack of common sense about food and nutrition here. I walked around looking for something decent to eat and couldn't find a single healthy option. The hospital cafeteria is basically a junk‑food stall - the display is full of samosas, fried paneer rolls, veg burgers and cheese sandwiches. In the mornings they sell waffles, bagels, sweets and all kinds of deep‑fried items.

The worst part is the actual patient meals. For breakfast they gave my mother plain white bread with sugary jam.

How can a place meant for healthcare be so clueless about basic nutrition? Has anyone else seen this kind of irony in our hospitals? It's incredibly frustrating.

Edit / P.S. To those saying the cafeteria food is only for visitors, I'm here day and night looking after my mom and I need to eat too! I'd love to see real healthy options. A hospital should promote health for everyone who walks through its doors, not just serve deep‑fried junk and sugar to stressed families.

Usually it's the doctors who eat there, speaking as a doctor!

They even have chocolate and vanilla milkshakes... if you need more sugar.

Ask for the patient's food, don't question my snacks at work.

Don't spread fake news. All hospitals serve separate meals for patients (I'm an MBBS student). The items in your picture are mostly bought by doctors, visitors and nurses.

Probably meant to lift the mood of patients and their companions.

That's for visitors, not patients. What's wrong with that?

Come on OP, this is misleading. They have a cantine that serves regular food. The image you posted is from a café that offers ready‑made, grab‑and‑go items. For patient meals, there's usually a dietician you can talk to and request changes.

Sorry to break it to you, but this is what doctors eat during long duty hours in India. Some days an egg puff and tea keep a surgeon going all day. I might get downvoted, but the reality is our system is really messed up.
