Further Context:

Mayurbhanj, Odisha - Dr Debabrata Nandi, Assistant Professor in the P.G. Department of Remote Sensing & GIS at North Orissa University, says, "When I took my students on a field tour, I spotted some fossil-like pieces. The locals told us they were 'Asura hadda' - demon bones. We investigated further and uncovered several fossils, including micro-fossils such as shark teeth and shark vertebrae, plus a few other fragments we haven't identified yet. We're now working with palaeontologists from various institutes. The fossils likely date back about 15 million years to the Miocene. If this area hadn't been a marine belt, we wouldn't have found shark teeth or other sea-animal remains. Their presence tells us a sea once covered the region, which has since retreated roughly 60 km from Baripada. Everyone should study why it receded so far... We could develop the site as a geo-heritage spot or promote geo-tourism here..."
