Hey everyone, I'm from the US and just got a gym membership here. Back home I just walk in with my shoes, that's normal. But here I see many people come in with slippers, take them off, go inside the gym and then put on another pair of shoes. Is that a rule, or can I just wear my shoes all the way in?
The title could be phrased as "after going into the gym".
Yes, most gyms here separate gym shoes from outdoor footwear. It's mainly for cleanliness and other reasons.
It often depends on the gym's price. I pay about 1500 Rs in a tier‑3 city where people work out barefoot or even in slippers. Another gym charges around 2500 Rs and they enforce a shoe‑only rule. So walking in with shoes isn't usually a problem in higher‑priced places.
It varies, but upscale gyms enforce the rule strictly. You might get some leeway if your shoes are spotless, but it's usually not worth the hassle.
At my gym I can work out barefoot if I like, and I have done that. But outdoor footwear is strictly prohibited. In the US most places have paved roads, whereas in India you often get mud.
It's quite common. Any gym that cares about cleanliness won't let you walk in with outdoor shoes.
The same practice is followed in Europe. You can't bring dirty street shoes inside to work out on the treadmills.
Indian roads are dusty, so you can't wear outdoor shoes inside the gym. Gym shoes need to be clean and free of dirt.
You should ask yourself: is it really hard to avoid walking on our dusty roads and then step into the gym with the same shoes? Why wouldn't you follow what most people do, even if there's no strict rule?
Think about it – if you stepped in dog waste and then entered the gym with the same shoes, the whole place would smell and get dirty across the floors where many people work out. What would happen then?
