Title: Prelims anxiety affecting me
Post by: Anupama on May 20, 2026, 09:47 AM
Four days left for the prelims and I'm feeling extremely anxious. I was worrying about it yesterday too - whether I'll be able to clear it or not. My anxiety comes from poor mock test scores. In full‑length tests I usually attempt about 50‑60 questions and score 40‑50 marks. I even tried to increase my attempts, but I still can't reach 80 questions like many people talk about online.

I don't understand why these thoughts keep looping when there are only a few days left and I should be focusing on revision. If anyone has been through a similar situation, please share how you dealt with it.

I really need help because these thoughts are messing with my focus on revision at the moment.

Bhai, revision ko itna overthink mat kar – jitna sochega, utna time waste hoga. My personal experience: record a 20‑minute audio and listen to it ten times, then trust your hard work and go give the exam. I'm also in the same phase, but learn to fight even at the last moment.

Attempting only 40‑50 questions is far too low. You need to cross at least 75 questions to have a chance of clearing the exam. Silly mistakes happen, and you're just aiming for the cutoff.

Also, don't panic. Jo hoga dekha jaega.

Stop solving mocks right now. Focus on revising static material and doing previous‑year questions. Mocks don't accurately represent what you'll face in the prelims.

Brother, take a deep breath and read this carefully. You need to throw those mock test percentages out of the window right now. You're panicking because you're trying to play a game designed by coaching institutes, while the real game on Sunday is completely different.

You're scoring 40‑50 marks in coaching FLTs because those tests are deliberately packed with obscure facts and current‑affairs minutiae to break your confidence. They don't reflect the real UPSC standards. Trying to push your attempts to 80+ just because "people discuss online" and blindly guessing to hit an arbitrary number will only push your mock scores into a negative spiral.

Right now you feel you don't have the perfect "shirt" of high mock scores and confidence. But you have your own limbs, survival instincts, and the hard work you've put in. You can adapt inside the hall and protect your paper with sheer composure.

Here's the exact, concrete advice to stabilise your mind and focus on revision for the remaining four days:

Stop looking at mock tests: Do not check another mock score, don't open analytics dashboards, and stop solving new test keys. Coaching institutes write questions based on rote memorisation; UPSC frames questions on conceptual clarity and logical elimination. Your performance in a coaching mock does not correlate with your performance on Sunday.

The attempt‑count myth: There is no rule that you must attempt 80+ questions. If the paper is tough and analytical (like 2023 or 2024), an attempt count of 65‑70 with high accuracy is far more effective than an anxious 80+ attempts riddled with negative marking. Let the actual paper's difficulty dictate your attempts, not a Reddit thread or a Telegram poll.

The 4‑day micro‑filter: You can't revise the whole ocean now, and that's okay. Pick high‑yield areas each day. For a quick visual glance, look at maps (West Asia, key trade routes), core Polity tables (articles, amendments, bodies), or critical environment headings. When you focus on a small, tangible target, your brain stops panicking about the macro picture.

Shift from recall to recognition: Your anxiety makes you think you can't focus because you keep checking if you remember every detail. Stop testing your memory! UPSC is a multiple‑choice game. The correct answer sits right there on the paper on Sunday, hidden among three traps. Your subconscious just needs to recognise it, not pull it out of thin air.

The doubts you're hearing are normal – they show you care about your effort. But don't let a few poorly designed coaching keys convince you that you've lost the battle before it even starts.

Disconnect from online forums, step away from comparison threads, protect your sleep, and do light, quiet reading at your desk. You've done the silent work for months. Trust that it will show up when you need it.

Hold your ground, brother. You are far more ready than you think.

Treat previous‑year questions like a full‑length test for 2024‑2025. Instead of just answering, try to deduce the pattern and how questions are framed. Keep revising static material as well. Combining PYQs with static notes is more than enough for the last three‑four days.

You have to face the fight no matter what, so don't worry about the result – focus on the fight. If it's inevitable, just face it and break it.
