Title: MBA 2025 grad confused: ₹1L PO job feels like door‑to‑door sales
Post by: Sanjay on May 12, 2026, 07:56 PM
Hi everyone, I finished my MBA in 2025 and am now a PO at a private bank. I've been here for about three months and I'm really confused about my career path. When I joined, they said the role would be a mix of operations and sales, but now it's turned into heavy target‑driven field sales – chasing CASA, funding, door‑to‑door acquisition. I'm posted about 500 km away from home. The salary is good – around ₹1 lakh per month net – but I don't see myself doing this long term. I've realized I don't want a field‑sales role where everything depends on targets. The pressure seems to be rising each quarter, and there's a three‑month notice period, so if I quit my total experience will be only six months as a PO. I'm even thinking of resigning without another offer and keep applying on the side, but I'm not sure if that's wise so early in my career. Please share real, practical advice from anyone who's been in a similar spot.

Bhai, you're talking about the money – what better job can you get for that pay?

This happens a lot in private banks. PO positions often become sales‑heavy even if they're advertised as operations‑focused.

Three months is still early to walk away, especially when you're earning ₹1 lakh per month and have no backup. That kind of pay is tough to match right after an MBA.

My advice: stay for a little while and quietly apply for other roles. Treat the current job as a source of income and experience, and move only when you have a better‑fit offer, not just because you're frustrated.

Leaving now without an offer may give short‑term relief but it's risky in the long run.

Is it ICICI Bank? Take it easy, prepare well and then make the switch.

Hey buddy,

I began in sales back in 2005 and still think a sales start is valuable, especially if you aim for higher responsibilities.

Sales forces you to understand customers, their mindset and what drives them.

Those insights are handy if you later move into customer‑success or product‑manager roles in other industries.

All the best!

I'm also in a private‑bank sales role and have already resigned. The daily pressure and targets felt like pointless goals. I'd suggest quitting and upskilling for finance or operations jobs. With the right certifications you can move to desk‑based roles. If you have another interest, explore it and build a career around it.

What was your MBA specialization? I'd suggest staying at least a year, then learning ERP functional consulting and shifting to that track.

Our profiles are very similar – I was also a PO earning the same amount. It was mostly operations with sales pressure, and the manager would scold me every few days for missing targets while I was busy handling all the bank operations, even missing lunch breaks.

I eventually quit and have been job‑hunting for a few months. In my view, I'd advise you not to quit right now. Keep applying elsewhere while putting in minimal effort here. The salary is a big plus, so use it as long as you can and leave when you secure a better opportunity.

Most bank roles end up being sales‑focused. My neighbour became an RM at Axis Bank after his BBA, handling many financial products but mostly loans. If you're after a comfortable job on the accounting or finance side, look for those specific positions.
