Title: Middle‑class to rich: how did you achieve it?
Post by: Chitra on May 09, 2026, 06:57 AM
I'm a 22‑year‑old male, did my B.Tech in CSE from MDU Rohtak, cleared GATE CSE with a good rank and will join IIT Kanpur for M.Tech CSE this year. Seniors from IITK on Reddit told me the packages are excellent – I can easily expect a 30 LPA offer. I could join a good company, work hard, switch jobs, get higher salaries and live comfortably, calling myself rich. But I'd still be a salaried guy; if I lose my job I'd have nothing. How can I become truly rich – enough to buy my dream house (around 10 cr) and my dream car (around 3 cr) without endless EMIs? How can I earn enough that I never have to worry about losing a job and can call myself rich in the real sense?

Start your own business, work tirelessly until it becomes a national brand, then you can buy whatever you want.

Money alone shouldn't drive you. You need a genuine interest. If you love tech and your job, why not create content around it or start teaching people? I'm giving this example because it's something you can do without burning out, assuming you're passionate about tech. Or, if you have an idea for a product or service, that could be another path.

You're already ahead of most people at 22. A high salary makes you comfortable, but real wealth comes from owning assets that grow even when you're not working – businesses, equity, investments, high‑leverage skills, etc.\nFirst focus on becoming financially strong, not just 'looking rich'. Most folks chasing 3 cr cars drown in EMIs. Build rare skills, save aggressively, invest consistently, and use your IIT/network advantage wisely. You're rich when your money works for you, not when your salary is high.

Punctuation, OP, punctuation! The only way I've seen people move into the 'rich' category (though 'rich' is subjective) is either by working overseas for several years or by starting a business (which has its own risks).

Lower‑class to well‑settled journey in short:\n1. Moved to Dubai in 2014\n2. First job paid 1,000 AED, very basic\n3. Slowly built a network and did freelancing\n4. Got a full‑time client\n5. Bought a Jaguar on installments\n6. Switched jobs 4‑5 times over 12 years, salary rose to 15,000 AED as UI/UX design manager\n7. Took a mortgage and bought a villa 15 min from Sharjah airport (3,200 sq ft freehold, 5‑bedroom + large living area + maid's room, corner unit)\n8. Area got hype, prices doubled, but I didn't sell; rented the villa for 130,000 AED\n9. Used rent, savings and a personal loan to buy a 2‑bedroom + study apartment\n10. World's first water‑cooled AI data centre opened right next to the apartment building in Ajman, financed by Microsoft\n11. After two more years of struggle I'll stop working\nAnd to think, when I was working day and night in India I could barely save ₹8,000 for rent because people wouldn't pay unless you chased them aggressively.

Loses*\n\nBruh, you're so educated yet you still misspell 'lose'. Something doesn't add up.

You'll never become rich as a salaried employee – either go abroad and earn in dollars, or join a startup or start a business here.
