Title: Testing sun protection in my facial products using a UV test card
Post by: Vivek on Mar 16, 2026, 02:40 AM
I decided to buy a UV test card and check out the stuff I wear on my face for sun protection

So as the title says, I got a UV test card from Amazon for around 200 bucks and used it to test the things I wear on my face under my helmet, including the helmet visor, for sun protection. Most of my sun exposure happens when I'm riding my two-wheeler to work, and since I ride straight into the sun both ways, it's on my face for about an hour every day. I don't bother with sunscreen, so I was curious to see how much protection I was actually getting. I usually wear a mask, balaclava, and handkerchief under my helmet since they're all pretty thin, especially the balaclava. I live in a really hot and sunny place, and I did this test around 3:30-4 PM, though there was some cloud cover which probably reduced the UV intensity. The results were all pretty similar, but the helmet visor was a pleasant surprise, even though I knew polycarbonate is supposed to block most UV, according to what I've read online. While it didn't block all of it in my test, it seems to get you about 90% of the way. Not sure if this is the right sub, but I'm sharing in case it's useful to others. Feel free to ask me if anything's not clear.

Can you try testing sunscreen versus moisturizer by putting a layer on plastic film and then on the card?

Just buy a helmet with a built-in sun visor, it blocks 100% of the UV rays

OP, you should check out the Rynox Vapour Pro base layer top and wear it under your t-shirt. It's UV rated and doesn't make me feel hot, plus it wicks away moisture like their other base layers and feels cool when you're moving at 25-30KMPH

To be honest, these UV testing kits are pretty useless, they're mostly focused on UVB, up to 320-340nm, so if you're worried about skin darkening or wrinkles from sun damage, it's not going to help.

I found out about the visor when my white helmet started yellowing, but the area covered by the visor is still white.
