That's fine, but he had no problem because RPS was just a short-term side and CSK was set to return in 2018, with him back as captain.

He didn't handle it perfectly. Many insiders say he would ignore Steve Smith's (the captain then) instructions and walk out to bat whenever he felt like it.

Agreed... Dhoni is one of the rare players who never shows off his ego in public - about 99% of the time - and keeps the peace around him.

I'm leaving that 1% for the critics who will try to find examples.

He didn't want to bond with the Pune fans only to break their hearts by jumping back to CSK. He's a private guy but very sensitive to his supporters, and he wanted to assure the CSK crowd that he's theirs alone.

In a similar scenario, Hardik would probably have taken the Pune captaincy and then rushed back to CSK after the ban, creating haters in both fanbases.

So? Rohit Sharma also handled it gracefully... Gautam Gambhir even returned his entire IPL fee after a poor season as captain and player for Delhi Daredevils. That's something.

And as I always say,

forget Goenka.

I think people are over-reading this. He got paid to play and he played. Most captains have played together under different leaders.

If I were MSD, I'm not sure legends like Bhuvneshwar, Sehwag and others would stick around. I'd probably go full 'homelander' with them. MSD is definitely the calmest and never shows his ego in public.

He came back the next year as captain and lifted the trophy.

So far, Goenka has been put down by:

Dhoni,
KL,
Rishabh,
and even himself.
