Title: Sudden acne breakout, could be protein powder?
Post by: Namrata on Apr 30, 2026, 10:51 AM
NOTE: I USE PLANT PROTEIN

Around two months back, I started getting pimples on my chin which gradually spread to my cheeks. I visited a dermatologist first, and she immediately suggested antibiotics, but I didn't want them because I had just stopped some other meds, so I decided to wait.

My diet, lifestyle, and skincare have all stayed the same. The only change is that I began taking Cosmix protein powder.

I stopped it three weeks ago, and the acne seems to be clearing up (it was a lot worse before). Another two to three weeks should tell me if I'm on the right track.

I know whey protein can cause acne for many people, but plant protein usually doesn't. Since Cosmix is plant‑based, I'd be surprised if it's the cause.

Plant protein generally doesn't boost sebum much, whereas whey or dairy protein is more often linked to breakouts. You could try pea protein – it's usually safer for acne‑prone skin – but still see another dermatologist.

Yes! I used Cosmix plant protein – the best one around – for about four years. I ended up with a lot of acne, and my dermatologist asked me to stop. Within two months I was almost clear (some scars remain). He advised me to get protein from natural sources. Protein powder isn't harmful, but for some people it can trigger acne.

Some people can't tolerate whey. You could try tempeh, soy or low‑fat paneer instead.

Can you please suggest a protein powder? I'm thinking of trying whey protein for the first time. If I'm not lactose‑intolerant, can I take a larger dose of whey, or will it cause acne? Which protein is safest for acne‑prone skin? I'm already on isotretinoin (10 mg twice a day).
