Title: How is ₹50L household income seen as average?
Post by: Ira on Apr 25, 2026, 11:28 PM
If around 80 % of folks don't own a car and about 90 % of students are in government or state‑board schools, how does this subreddit think a ₹50 L per year household income is average? Is it just a bubble or am I missing something – what's the real figure?

Resources are limited here but the population is huge, so if you want a decent life you can't count the 60‑70 % of people whose finances are barely subsistence – they literally survive on crumbs. I know that sounds harsh. Also many don't pay taxes and hold untracked assets and black money. So, in certain circles ₹50 L is considered average.

People on Reddit belong to the affluent class, that's why.

Reddit isn't India; it's a community of wealthy Indians.

No, it's not average – it's a top‑1 % salary in India.

Because this is an echo chamber of wealthy people. Most of what Reddit India calls average doesn't match ground reality.

Income on Reddit isn't a good measure, buddy. Most people I know in real life earn less than ₹1 L per month, and a few are happy with even ₹40‑50 k a month.

Who said it's average?

Someone in the comments even says 50L is avg income. In India, to be in the top 10 % you need about 20 k per month (₹2.4 L a year) or more, so claiming ₹50 L is average here is wildly delusional and out of touch. Reddit is an echo chamber, and so are the cities we live in.

Only someone with a delusion would say that. It's high, but it doesn't make you affluent.

India as a country and r/personalfinanceindia aren't the same, buddy; it's a very niche platform.
