Title: Skipping NEET after 2 attempts… is bioinformatics worth it in India?
Post by: Sanjay on Apr 24, 2026, 01:18 AM
Hey everyone,

my_qualifications: I'm asking on behalf of my sister – she studied PCB, finished 12th, and has attempted NEET twice.

I need some practical advice from anyone who's been in a similar spot or works in this area.

My sister spent the last two years prepping for NEET. She gave it her best, but she's not confident about clearing it this time either. She's 19 and finished 12th last year. After a lot of thought, she's beginning to accept that NEET may not work out, so we're looking at other career options.

One option she's eyeing is Bioinformatics, but we don't know much about it.

I'd like to know:
- Is bioinformatics a good career choice in India right now?
- Which colleges should we target?
- What do job prospects, salary growth, and future scope look like?
- Is it mainly research‑oriented or are there industry roles too?
- Any alternative courses you'd suggest for someone with a biology background?

Your insights – whether you studied bioinformatics or are working in the field – would be really helpful. Even general guidance will help us make a practical, informed decision.

Thanks in advance

I'm in a similar spot. Not many Indian colleges offer a dedicated bioinformatics programme. If she scores well in 12th, studying abroad could be an option, but that would take at least a year. Right now the realistic path is a BSc in a related science (e.g., BSc Zoology, BSc Biotechnology). Keep in mind that a BSc is mainly research‑focused, and she can always pursue an MBA after it if she doesn't want to go for an MSc or PhD.

Job opportunities are limited because bioinformatics is a niche field, not a generic degree. If she skips both MBA and MSc, the best she could expect abroad is around 2 lakhs per year, and that would usually require an MSc + PhD. In a European country, a fresh graduate with those qualifications might earn 40‑60 lakhs annually, with growth over time. With a BSc followed by an MBA from a top institute like IIM or ISB, she could aim for 20‑30 lakhs in the industry, assuming the best scenario.

Overall, bioinformatics leans heavily towards research.

There aren't many alternative courses for PCB students; the safest bet is a BSc in a science she enjoys, and later she can consider an MBA if she wishes.

Bioinformatics is an interesting subject, but job prospects are limited. Biological sciences are still underdeveloped in India and research grants are scarce. If you really want to pursue this field, I would suggest doing a master's abroad. The domestic job market is thin and bioinformatics is not widely explored, except in a few top biotech companies.

You won't find a high‑paying job straight after a BSc in biology, and even after a BTech in biotechnology the salaries are modest. In the bio‑related industry, salaries start low – around 25‑30 k per month – and only increase with experience.

One route is to continue into research and aim for a PhD, either in academia or industry. Many central government colleges offer stipends for masters and integrated PhD programmes, so your sister can cover basic expenses. During a funded PhD at a good institute, she can expect a take‑home of about 37‑42 k per month.

Also, why skip NEET altogether? She can still appear for the exam; there's nothing to lose.

My suggestion is to look at IISERs, IISc, NISER or CEBS. I hope you've filled the forms for NEST and IAT. Getting into any of these institutes will broaden her perspective on science.

Life sciences in India are pretty stagnant with little growth. Typically you end up doing a BSc, then an MSc, and finally join a biotech firm that makes monoclonal antibodies or vaccines, with a starting salary around 3.5 LPA. The work usually involves analysing protein samples and doing limited method development for biosimilar products, not genuine R&D.

India spends only about 0.6 % of its GDP on R&D, so most biotech companies focus on producing biosimilars – cheaper copies of innovator drugs – rather than original research. When patents expire, they simply use the same technology to manufacture these copies. Because there's almost no investment in R&D, pursuing a research‑focused career here offers little payoff.
