Title: Lays' Latest Messy Scam
Post by: Naresh on Apr 23, 2026, 04:48 PM
I saw a new Lays pack and thought they might have swapped the palm oil. But but but....

People nowadays know palm oil is unhealthy and they check the ingredients list.

What they did is rename palmolein oil as vegetable oil and put a symbol next to it. You have to scroll down to see what that symbol means. Then they added two more symbols that correspond to two other types of oils.

That's not all. After that you're supposed to look at the last character of the batch number on the Lays packet and match it with the info above.

And finally, Eureka!!! It's palm oil. Yay

Eating those chips gave me borderline high cholesterol. I'm not falling for any tricks these chip makers pull.

I've kinda switched to Max Protein and SuperYou protein chips; the ingredients look okay, any red flags?

If you're health-conscious, skip this junk. It's aimed at the mass market in the affordable segment.

One thing people often misunderstand is why palm oil is considered bad.

Health-wise, it's not the worst oil out there. In terms of saturated fats, coconut oil is far worse, and recent studies link omega-3 and omega-6 imbalances to inflammation, making sunflower oil worse than palm oil. The nutritional effects of each fat are still debated, especially since there's a lack of studies on the Indian population and how the FADS gene influences us.

The main reason palm oil gets a bad rap is its environmental impact. Palm plantations drive deforestation in Southeast Asia, destroying habitats for animals like orangutans. There are also ethical concerns about labour. (If we replace palm oil completely, other oil productions might need even more land, so the overall impact is debatable.)

Palm oil isn't the best for your body, but it's far from the worst either.

Lots of comments, yet no one points out that palm oil and palmolein aren't the same. Both come from palm, but they're totally different.
