On 14 April 2026, Sindhuja, a 25‑year‑old Dalit woman from Valaikattai village in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, took her own life after she says she was assaulted and humiliated by DMK party workers.
The row started over election campaign freebies – reportedly household utensils or "model coupons" under the Illatharasi scheme.
- The Confrontation: On the night of 13 April, DMK workers were handing out gifts for their candidate S Kathiravan. When Sindhuja asked for a gift, the workers allegedly told her the items were only for party cadres.
- The Assault: After she questioned the bias, the workers are said to have pulled her hair, used obscene language and struck her with a broomstick.
- The Outcome: Distressed by the public humiliation, Sindhuja hanged herself the next morning. She is survived by her husband Prasanth and their daughter.
- Arrests: Police have booked nine people under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of suicide and under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. As of 16 April, six have been arrested, including a local DMK branch secretary.
