Title: Need advice: dropping out & switching colleges - how to convince parents
Post by: Ankita on Apr 18, 2026, 03:28 PM
I'm studying hotel management in Delhi, but I just don't enjoy it. The campus, the vibe, the people – everything feels disappointing. I commute about an hour by metro every day, and there's a language barrier because most folks, even teachers, speak Hindi, which I don't know since I'm from the Northeast.

I chose hotel management because my family runs several businesses, including a hospitality wing. The plan was to help manage and grow that side later. After a while, I realise I'm not learning anything truly useful for my long‑term goals; it feels more like training for day‑to‑day ops rather than running a business.

I've talked to my parents. They say I should finish what I started, and I get that. Still, I feel stuck in an environment that's hurting my motivation and mental health.

Now I'm thinking of switching to a BA in another college, maybe in a different state, where the environment is better, I can have a decent college life and hang out with people I click with and actually grow.

I feel guilty because my parents have already invested a lot – they even bought a flat for me in Delhi – and I haven't even completed a year. I don't want to let them down, but I also don't want to spend the next few years doing something I genuinely dislike.

Has anyone faced a similar situation? How did you talk to your parents about it?

Prepare a PPT and present it with all your heart and emotions. Tell them that staying on this path will make you miserable, while the other path, even if it pays less, will bring fulfilment.

Check out the RIEs listed under NCERT; their BA+BED program is quite good.
