Title: (29 M) Marriage on the Brink – 1 yr married, 7 yr together
Post by: Harish on Apr 04, 2026, 11:28 AM
I'm stuck in a tough spot with my marriage and need some straight‑forward advice. My wife and I haven't really spoken for the past couple of months – she asked for space and I gave it. I've tried a few calm attempts to reach out and understand what's bothering her, but she mostly stays silent.

She's hinted she wants to end things, but she hasn't given clear reasons. From what I gather, it could be about mismatched expectations, emotional compatibility, and how we handle fights – none of which we ever really discussed.

One big trigger was at her best friend's wedding. She thought I was being too friendly with another lady – offering her water, holding the door. I didn't see anything wrong and I've treated my wife the same way before.

That night she exploded, became verbally abusive and even physically aggressive. I was hurt and pulled back emotionally. For about two weeks after we got back, we barely spoke. I know my withdrawal may have added to it, but I also felt my hurt wasn't acknowledged.

We had agreed to meet in person to talk, but she never set a date. Her dad says he wants us to try, but she stays distant and non‑committal.

It feels like she's mentally checked out, not willing to resolve or even clearly end things. I'm torn between wanting closure and staying in a one‑sided situation. Should I make one final effort, or just move on?

TL;DR – She asked for space, now she's unresponsive and wants to end the marriage without discussion. My attempts to talk failed. I'm stuck between seeking closure and moving on.

Bro, just ask her straight up if she wants to stay married. If she doesn't give a clear answer, then consider divorce.

The issue is pretty immature – you were just being courteous by offering water or holding a door, not cheating. She's upset because you, like any normal person, interact with other people.

It sounds like she expects to be the only one who matters, and any respectful gesture to anyone else feels like a betrayal. If she can't tolerate you being polite to other women, she must think you never looked at anyone else in the past seven years.

How you survived seven years is the real question!

If the trust gap is that big after seven years together, it might be better to call it quits.

Many of us women struggle to put our feelings into words, especially when we're still processing them. She might just need more time to sort things out, and there could be other issues she hasn't voiced yet. If you truly want to keep the relationship and hold no grudges, try saying you'll be in the neighbourhood and would like to meet up – just as friends, over coffee or a bite. Keep the conversation light, talk about things she enjoys, and don't bring up the marriage issue. She may open up then.

Give it a chance if you feel it's worth it. The rest is up to you.

My husband is the same – he brings chocolates or candies to my friends and dances with them at parties, and I never mind because that's just his style and I love him for it. Different people think differently, so maybe there are other things she's feeling but can't say. I always think talking things out is the only way to improve a relationship, big or small. If you don't communicate, it won't work.

Give her all your love and make her feel the world revolves around her; show you'll do anything to keep her happy.

Yes, pour all your energy into making her feel she's the centre of the universe – as if your feelings, needs, or wants don't matter at all. You gave another woman water... how could you! It shattered her belief that she's your only boss. LOL. I feel like I was born in the wrong era.

Give couple's therapy a try, if she's willing.

Even after all these years you still don't know each other's triggers. You could have adapted your behavior to suit her, but she also comes across as immature and insecure. Therapy might help.

Could you keep showering her with romantic gestures, proving you're a one‑woman man? I doubt a glass of water or holding a door is the only reason. She's probably noticed other patterns, felt left out or insecure, maybe based on past experiences. There must be more to this after seven or eight years together.
