My Qualifications: Education counsellor working with K-12 students and parents
One pattern I keep seeing:
Students rarely *choose* their stream themselves.
Usually it goes like this:
- PCM because "good students take PCM"
- Commerce because "maths weak hai"
- Arts as a last resort
In all this, the kid's real interest barely gets a mention.
By the time they reach 11th or 12th, many are just coping with a decision they never truly made.
It's not about which stream is better – it's about how casually one of the biggest decisions is taken.
Question: Did you actually choose your stream, or did it just happen to you?
It isn't just about your interests; nobody talks about a career plan. Why do you want to study that? What's your college plan? Do you have a backup? How will you get a job in today's economy? If I could go back to the end of 10th grade, I wish someone had guided me on getting a job or making solid backup plans. Interests are fine, but you also need to think about which option gives you the best chance of earning after studies. Collecting degrees won't pay the bills – I learned that the hard way.

As a 12th‑grader thinking about life choices right now, I totally agree, lol.
On top of that, schools decide which stream you're 'capable' of based on their biased criteria and they just upload a single document for all students instead of telling each one personally. It feels like they don't expect us to work hard or be accountable.
I'm a PCB student and I regret not picking PCM. I feel PCM should be mandatory for PCB students. A biology degree feels useless across India; only maths seems to land a decent job or at least get you employed easily.
I chose my stream based on two things – my interests and the fact that I was unfamiliar with other options. I never wanted engineering or maths, and I had no exposure to commerce, so it felt odd. I liked economics and even read half the NCERT books between 10th and 11th, but I finally went for PCB because biology attracted me, chemistry was fun, and physics could be good if I focused. I also enjoyed psychology and did well, though my board results suffered due to external issues. The school forced me into computer science, which was another mess. In the end I regret taking PCB because of limited options, so I wouldn't recommend it. Commerce and PCM feel like better choices to me.
Exactly, I feel the same. I never wanted medical studies; I'm more into software engineering, but I spent two years on NEET coaching instead. I regret it every day and wish I could turn back time.
I was lucky enough to pick my own stream, but I regret it. The Arts stream feels almost useless. I chose it because my sister suggested it, and now I can't stand it, but at least I'm done with it.
I'm at that point now. Deep down I know my interest is humanities, but poor job prospects push me toward PCM. I can switch to a BA after graduation, but I can't go the other way around from humanities.
I made the same mistake, taking PCM instead of Arts. Now I'm a dropper with just a 95 percentile in JEE and feel like a total failure. I regret it a lot.
