Title: Zerodha says ‘no one will pay’, yet we’ve 500 traders onboard
Post by: Asha on Apr 03, 2026, 06:09 AM
Few months back I reached out to Nithin Kamath about the trade‑journaling platform I'd been building for almost a year. I'm really grateful he replied the next day and introduced me to the Rainmatter team.

The chats with folks from his founder's office and Rainmatter were interesting. I went into those calls just wanting insights, feedback and ideas to improve. But they seemed to think I was looking for investment.

I gave them a demo and the first questions were:

How many users do you have?
How many of them are paying?

I was confused. I expected product feedback, not numbers. I thought they'd understand I wasn't building this for money, but to help traders.

I didn't have those figures ready. At that point I didn't even have paying users – I'd just introduced subscriptions and everything had been free till then.

Then they said something that stuck with me:

"No one will pay for this. Any broker can build it themselves. Traders have no reason to use you when their broker can offer it with better data."

I get where they were coming from. But what they added next made me realise something important.

Just five minutes later they mentioned:

"Less than 2% of our users actually put effort into journaling and tagging their trades."

For them 2% is tiny. For us it's huge.

* They have no real incentive to build for that 2%
* Even if they do, it won't be a priority
* It will stay limited, slow to improve, and only for their own users

What we're building works for traders across brokers – everything in one place.

That 2%? Those are the traders who truly care about improving. That means there are still lakhs of traders in India who want to track, analyse and get better.

Where we are today:

* 500 traders have journaled over 75K trades
* ₹150M+ in trading value tracked
* Support for 7 brokers (more on request)
* We now have paying users (won't share exact numbers yet – maybe after 10K users)

And I'm no longer alone – I have an amazing co‑founder and we're moving faster.

We're working every day to build the best trading journal for Indian traders. Right now we're expanding into mutual funds and real‑time tracking of positions, holdings and investments – all in one place.

Still early. Still learning.

If you care about tracking your trades, feel free to DM me. Happy to show what we've built.

Don't brokers already show the same data your app offers?

I'm a bit lost. Is this a project, an app, or something on Zerodha? Could you explain it in simple terms for folks like us?

What exactly is a trading journal?

Hey, is this a paid model? I think anyone serious about trading, not just gambling, uses some kind of tracker. Your solution seems more helpful than the basic Excel sheets we all keep. Is it integrated with broker APIs like Tijori, so every transaction auto‑feeds into the journal, or do we have to enter trades manually?

I prefer to keep it simple and just use Google Sheets.

I built a browser extension that gives you trading‑dashboard style analytics right over a Google Sheet. All the data stays offline in the user's own sheet, no backend, no third‑party services, no ads, no privacy worries – everything is stored in the local browser cache. Simple, private, informative.

I asked for feedback but they only cared about numbers.

What? Are they some sort of evaluation agency that will analyse and give you insights for free?

Sir, this isn't LinkedIn.
